Mirai Nikki – Episode 16: Like Father, Unlike Son
Man, I’m already late on all of these, and then Mirai Nikki gets two episodes in a week? But hey, who can complain about something like that? I’ll just have to be more persistent!
Episode 16 begins with a sudden introduction of Yuki’s father, who appears to be in town to visit his hospitalized son. Within the hospital, Ninth seems to be keeping busy with Yuki’s rehabilitation; it’s good to see that she’s still on their side, for the most part. It doesn’t take long before Yuki’s father arrives in his room, and it’s quickly revealed that he’s quite the oddity. After managing to creep out Ninth, it’s suggested he challenges Yuki as part of rehab. If Yuki wins, he wants his father to remarry with his mother.
Marco and Ai are still busy toying around with Yuki and Yuno’s diaries, but it seems even their time together isn’t free of trouble. Ai’s diary picks up the potential that Marco is cheating on her, and as she continues to read, it only continues to sound worse. However, in the end it seems like Marco is planning on properly proposing to her, so everything ends up okay.
Time for the father-son competition. The first event is pull-ups, and while Yuki manages to get off a few, his weakling father is unable to even manage one. So that makes Yuki the winner, right? Well no, since Ninth seems to be having fun toying with him. On the second event, Yuki produces a fine result on the grip test, but his father cheats and Ninth acts as if nothing happened. Whatever the event is, it’s clear neither Ninth or Yuki’s father will let him win. While this is all happening, Yuno is happily creeping on them holding quite the large knife. Where she gets these…I’ll never know.
A marathon is to decide the true winner. However, it seems like the whole time, Yuki’s father was just amusing his wishes when he is unable to remarry due to a crippling debt. Yuki seems convinced that his father is looking out for his best interests, but moments later he is already back in Yuki’s room looking for his cellphone whilst talking to a client who will cancel his debts in exchange for its destruction. Yuno overhears this ploy and even attempts to kill off Yuki’s father before he causes major problems, but Yuki stops her from carrying out the deed. Soon afterwards, Marco calls Yuno and instructs her to lead Yuki’s father to where she is told, or their phones will be destroyed.
Marco and Ai are waiting for them in the meeting place, a tall tower in the middle of the city. With their diaries being held hostage, Yuki charges Marco but is easily overthrown. Whilst in an injured state, he watches in horror as his father walks over to the cell phone and snaps it in half. The phone turns out to be a fake, as Yuno attacks Ai and finds the real diaries hidden in the bouquet she was holding. They now have their diaries back, but a voice on the intercom informs everyone that they are out of time and the tower will be coming down. The next instance, the floor under Yuki crumbles and he begins to fall. Two hands stretch out to help him, and Yuki is asked who he trusts more…Yuno, or his father?
